The rise of hope

Updated: May 25, 2022

I don’t know about you but I’m still taking in the enormity a change of in government here in Australia.

In particular, I’m so heartened to be reminded that at the grass roots level we can have a big impact. That, as individuals our actions matter, and our vote really does count. The power of a few and the power of momentum was on full display during this election period.

It’s been inspiring to say the least.

My sister told me she didn’t realise how much stress she was holding as it felt like the country had lost its heart.

My mum told me she was exhausted after returning from a trip with my dad who has dementia, but despite that couldn’t’ stop grinning from ear to ear.

I shed a tear or two (ok or three) when on Q&A the now PM gave an emphatic YES that the refugee family will be returned to their home in Biloela Queensland – and perhaps more importantly, the acknowledgement that no individual and no family can be held responsible for "bringing back the boats”.

The collective relief that I have witnessed, that as a country we aren’t what we had become, was palpable.

The sense of optimism and hope that we will return to a country that recognises and celebrates our indigenous culture, that takes climate change seriously, that recognises the contribution of women, that cares about the future of our youth and those doing it tough feels like a homecoming. The Australia that’s described as lucky county. The one that was built on mateship. The one that gives everyone “a fair go”.

Yes, the numbers matter but they don’t define us.

Yes, we need to be real, but we don’t need to be ruled by fear.

Yes, hard decisions must be made, but they don’t have to be cruel.

What we contribute to the collective consciousness matters. This weekend proved that.

What are you going to do with this renewed sense of hope?
